What Is a Comic Translator?

A comic translator is an AI tool that reads the text on a comic page and replaces it with a translation, right where the original sat. It handles speech balloons, narration captions, sound effects and the signs drawn into the scene, and it keeps the art untouched.

Machine translation apps copy the words out of the page. A comic translator puts them back: each line goes into its own balloon in the lettering style of the book, so the page still reads like a comic.

Translate Any Kind of Comic

The comic translator reads the language and layout of each book on its own, so one tool covers comics from every tradition.

Every Piece of Text on the Page

A comic page carries more text than its balloons. The comic translator finds each kind and treats it the way a letterer would.

  1. 1

    Narration captions

Boxed narration at the top of a panel is translated as narration and stays inside its box.

  2. 2

    Signs in the scene

Shop signs and labels drawn into the background are translated when they matter to the story.

  3. 3

    Speech balloons

Dialogue is translated with the speaker and the scene in mind, then fitted to the balloon without spilling over the art.

  4. 4

    Sound effects

Lettered sound effects get a translation in the same loud style, so the action still lands.

  5. 5

    All-caps lettering

Western comics are lettered in capitals. Translations keep the clean comic lettering instead of plain typed text.

Comic Strip Translator: Before and After

A four-panel strip run through the comic translator from English to Spanish. Drag the slider to compare: each balloon keeps its place, and the thought bubble in the last panel stays a thought bubble.

  • Short gags keep their timing across the panels
  • Thought bubbles, whispers and shouts keep their look
  • Works for newspaper strips and webcomic pages
