What Is a Raw Manga Translator?

Raw manga means manga in its original Japanese, as printed in Japan, before any translation. A raw manga translator turns those pages into English on the page itself: it reads the Japanese, translates it and letters the English into the same bubbles.

Raw pages are harder than plain text. Dialogue runs top to bottom and right to left, small furigana sit beside the kanji, and sound effects are drawn into the art. This translator reads all of it and leaves the art as printed. Korean originals are manhwa; for those, use the manhwa translator.

Anatomy of a Raw Manga Page

Five things on a Japanese page that ordinary translators miss, and how each one is handled. Tap Show translation to see the English page.

  1. 1

    Vertical dialogue

Read top to bottom, column by column, then lettered as horizontal English inside the same bubble.

  2. 2

    Furigana

The small kana beside 灯里 give its reading, あかり, so the name comes out as Akari instead of a guess.

  3. 3

    Sound effects

The clang of the shrine bell, ガラン, becomes an English sound effect in the same spot.

  4. 4

    Handwritten asides

Small notes outside the bubbles, like ハァハァ for heavy breathing, are translated too.

  5. 5

    Right-to-left order

Panels are read right to left, so lines that answer each other stay in the right order.

Translate Scans and Phone Photos of Raw Manga

Photographed a page of a Japanese volume, or scanned a whole one? Yellowed paper, a slight tilt and screentone grain are no problem. Pages at least 600 pixels on the short side work; 1200 pixels or more reads best.

  • Scans and phone photos
  • Tilted or yellowed pages
  • Up to 8192 pixels per side

Consistent Names Without an Official Translation

A raw series has no official English names yet. The raw manga translator saves the names you choose, like 灯里 as Akari, and uses them the same way on every page and chapter, together with your choice for honorifics.

  • Names spelled your way, every chapter
  • Keep -san and -senpai, or turn them into English
  • Recurring terms translated the same each time
